Claude Dornier began as a struggling engineering student before a meeting with Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin pulled him into aviation, and this film traces the career that followed. It covers the Dornier Wal, the flying boat that carried Roald Amundsen's North Pole expeditions across the Arctic, and the Do X, a twelve-engine aircraft that held the title of largest aircraft in the world for years. The film moves through Dornier's design choices and the technical problems of building seaplanes strong enough to survive open-ocean landings, using period photographs, archival footage, and expository narration to lay out the engineering stakes behind each aircraft. It positions Dornier alongside better-known aviation pioneers of his era and argues for his place in that history through the scale of what he built rather than through personal drama. Running just under 45 minutes, it works as a compact biography of one engineer's role in making transoceanic flight possible, told through the machines themselves.
