Peatlands store more carbon than forests do, but in Germany almost all natural moorland has been drained for farming, turning it into a source of greenhouse gas instead of a sink. The film reports that dry peatlands account for seven percent of Germany's total emissions, and that the country's 1.5 million hectares of moorland could hold as much carbon as its entire forest system if rewetted. Scientists Greta Gaudig and Sabine Wichmann of the Greifswald Moor Centrum test growing peat moss and cattails on wet soil, materials that can be turned into potting soil and building products, giving farmers a way to earn income without draining the land. The film also travels to Bristol, where young entrepreneurs are turning cattail fiber into a sustainable substitute for down, a product selling well enough that several English farmers are converting drained fields back into wet moorland.
