Oymyakon, a Siberian village where winter temperatures drop below -65°C, is by most measures the coldest permanently inhabited place on Earth. The film follows Aljosha, an eight-year-old boy, through a single day there, starting with the walk to an outdoor toilet in a settlement that still lacks running water and indoor plumbing. Layered in traditional cold-weather clothing, he sets out on a two-kilometer trek to school, moving with the kind of focus that leaves little room for the usual distractions of childhood. The camera stays close on the practical mechanics of survival: how houses are heated, how water is kept from freezing solid, how clothing is chosen to prevent frostbite on exposed skin. Rather than treating the village as a curiosity, the film builds its narrative around the discipline the cold demands from everyone, including children, and lets Aljosha's routine carry the argument that daily life here is less about hardship as spectacle than about a community that has organized itself entirely around one brutal fact of geography.
