Combat Outpost

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Photojournalist and filmmaker John D McHugh spends months embedded with a US Army unit at a remote combat outpost in Afghanistan during 2008 and 2009. His camera stays close to the soldiers through patrols, firefights, and the long stretches of boredom between them, capturing the outpost itself as a kind of fortified island surrounded by hostile terrain. McHugh's own position as an embedded journalist becomes part of the story: he is present for combat, injury, and death, filming events as they happen rather than reconstructing them afterward. The footage is raw and unpolished, shot under real fire rather than staged for effect, and the film does not editorialize about the war's strategy or politics so much as record what daily survival looks like for the men holding one small piece of ground. It is a ground-level account of the Afghan war, built entirely from what one journalist saw and filmed while living alongside the unit he covered.
