Three beginners spend three months trying to have their first lucid dream, using techniques a group of British experts teach them: reality checks and meditation done while awake, journaling, and Richard Wiseman's Dream:ON app. The film cuts between their attempts and interviews with the researchers behind the practice, including Keith Hearne, who recorded the first verified lucid dream signal in a sleep lab, and Susan Blackmore, who addresses the science and skepticism around the state. Charlie Morley and Caroline McCready, who teach lucid dreaming as a discipline, walk through what separates it from an ordinary dream: the moment a sleeper recognizes they are dreaming and can then steer what happens next. Rory Mac Sweeney discusses his Mutual Dream Experiment, and a sleep services manager explains what happens to the brain during REM sleep. The three novices report their setbacks and small breakthroughs along the way, and the film closes by checking whether any of them managed a full lucid dream after the three months of practice.
