A camera travels through the production landscapes of China, moving from shipyards to factory floors where the everyday objects that fill homes elsewhere in the world get made. The film keeps its focus on the physical process of manufacturing, tracking the raw materials and assembly lines that turn into finished goods long before anyone abroad sees a price tag. Rather than narrating with statistics, it lets the scale of the shipyards and the repetition of factory labor make its argument about the hidden cost of consumption. The people running these production lines and the landscapes reshaped by industry become the real subject, standing in contrast to the finished products that arrive, clean and anonymous, in stores thousands of miles away. At nineteen minutes, the film works as a short, direct look at the manufacturing side of global consumer culture, the part of the supply chain most buyers never think to picture when they unwrap something new.
