Contract Law: Langer v. Superior Steel (Repudiated Pension)
Yale law professor Ian Ayres works through Langer v. Superior Steel as a case study in the consideration doctrine, part of his American Contract Law course later adapted for Coursera. The case turns on a repudiated pension promise, and Ayres uses it to test when a promise plus consideration becomes an enforceable bargain versus a gratuitous commitment a court will not enforce. He walks through the facts of the dispute and the reasoning courts have used to distinguish binding contractual exchanges from unenforceable gifts dressed up as promises. The lecture is short and focused, built around a single case file rather than a broad survey, and assumes viewers are following along with the underlying course materials on consideration and its substitutes.
