Germany has 1.8 million people living with dementia, a number projected to reach 2.8 million by 2050, and this film asks what kind of care actually works for them. Julia Bernsee's mother was diagnosed in 2019, first staying home, then moving into Julia's household, then into a nursing home. Julia describes her alarm at seeing dementia patients routinely sedated with medication to keep them manageable, a practice she found impossible to accept. The film follows her search for an alternative and the new facility she eventually finds, while also showing the strain on families who become caregivers by default as staff shortages make traditional care homes less viable. Interviews with relatives and caregivers sit alongside footage inside both conventional nursing homes and newer, small-scale residential models designed around safety and familiarity rather than institutional routine. The film treats the shortage of skilled nursing staff as the structural problem behind individual family crises, not just a background detail.
