An IMAX short built around a single continuous zoom: starting from a couple dancing at a lakeside festival, the camera pulls back through the Earth, the solar system, the Milky Way, and out to clusters of galaxies at the edge of the observable universe, then reverses and plunges back down through human skin into cells, molecules, atoms, and subatomic particles. The device echoes the Eames brothers' "Powers of Ten," but here the visuals are built with mid-1990s computer graphics rather than photography, giving the universe a rendered, diagrammatic look that was state of the art for IMAX screens at the time. Scientific advisors including physicist Philip Morrison appear to ground the scale-jumps in real astronomical and physical measurements, explaining what happens at each order of magnitude rather than just showing pretty pictures. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short. At 36 minutes it moves fast, treating the entire span of size in the universe, from galaxy superclusters down to quarks, as one continuous piece of geography.
