Filmmaker Jordan Albertsen sets out to make a straightforward documentary about how Hollywood movies get made, sending a scientist and his narrator to interview directors, producers, and actors about the craft. The premise curdles fast: the interviews keep circling into contradiction and confusion about what filmmaking actually is, and the film stops observing the process and starts performing it. The scientist and narrator end up inside their own movie, acting out scenes and improvising dialogue while the cameras that were supposed to be documenting them keep rolling. Albertsen cuts between straight talking-head interviews, behind-the-scenes footage of his own crew, and staged reenactments, letting the seams show rather than hiding them. There is no clean resolution separating the real interviews from the invented scenes; that blur is the point. The film works less as a study of Hollywood than as a demonstration of how quickly a documentary about making movies turns into a movie about making a documentary, with the crew's own confusion left in the final cut.
