Central American migrants crossing into Mexico face a second, less visible border before they ever reach the United States: the Suchiate River, drug cartels like the Zetas, corrupt police, and human traffickers who prey on travelers moving north by foot, bus, and freight train. This episode of VICE's Fringes follows Yoana, a young woman from Guatemala who has stopped in Huixtla, Chiapas, working as a prostitute to send money home to her two sons, one of the choices migrants make when the journey outpaces their resources. Cameras also ride along with a state government unit assigned to protect migrants as they pass through Chiapas, and later board the Beast, the freight train that carries more than 400 people at a time from Arriaga to Ixtepec, Oaxaca. Interviews with migrants along the route lay out why they left home and what they have already survived by the time they reach Mexico's interior, complicating the assumption that the hard part of the trip starts at the US line.
