Culture in Decline: What Democracy?
Peter Joseph, creator of the Zeitgeist film series, opens his "Culture in Decline" series with an episode timed to the 2012 US Presidential Election, using it as a launchpad to question whether electoral democracy actually represents anyone. Joseph frames the argument through Carl Sagan's thought experiment: if a visiting alien species asked humanity to account for its stewardship of the planet, how would we explain a world where nearly half the population, over 3 billion people, lives in poverty or dies preventably at a rate of roughly one person every couple of seconds, despite advanced technology that could prevent it? He argues that voting for candidates within a market-driven system changes little when the underlying economic structure produces those outcomes regardless of who holds office. The episode is presented as social commentary rather than reporting, delivered direct to camera with statistics and rhetorical questions rather than interviews or field footage. It sets up the series' recurring target: the gap between democratic ideals and the economic system they operate inside.
