São Paulo logs thousands of murders, robberies, and violent crimes a year, and this film follows the people caught on both sides of that statistic. Police units patrol favelas and describe the daily calculus of armed confrontation, while the camera moves into crack cocaine strongholds where a local pastor works to pull addicts out of dependency one conversation at a time. Antonio, a former offender, describes how mixed martial arts training gave him a way out of the gang life that once defined him, and the film uses his gym sessions as a recurring thread between the harder crime reporting. Interviews with officers, addicts, and reformed criminals sit alongside street-level footage of the city's poorer districts, building a picture of a metropolis where law enforcement, faith groups, and sport are all competing to offer an exit from violence. The film does not resolve which approach works best, but it stays close to the people trying each one, rather than treating the city as a crime statistic alone.
