Dawkins on Religion

Richard Dawkins sits across from journalist Mehdi Hasan at the Oxford Union, defending the claim that religion does more harm than good while an audience presses both men on where the argument breaks down. Hasan brings the counter-evidence in fast: Stalin and Mao banned religion outright and still killed millions, Hitler's atheism is disputed by religion's defenders, and science delivered the atomic bomb along with its cures. Dawkins, who rewrote the debate on genetics with The Selfish Gene in 1976 and became the world's most recognized atheist after The God Delusion, has to answer for whether his own science has become a kind of dogma. The exchange stays specific rather than abstract, moving through the Quran-burning pastor in Florida, riots over an anti-Islam film, and Buddhist violence against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar as test cases for what actually drives conflict. Neither man walks away with a clean win; the film ends with the same question it opened on, whether religion or its absence is the more dangerous force.
