Michaela, a 43-year-old mother of three from Essex, has been engaged for months to Jody Lee Miles, a man on Death Row in Maryland for shooting a musical theatre director. She started writing to inmates as an act of friendship after learning the death penalty still exists in America, and found herself falling in love with one of them. The film follows her daily routine of phone calls with Jody, where she lets him listen to her running a bath or cooking dinner just to give him a sense of ordinary life, and her decision to finally tell her daughters the truth about who he is. Her 22-year-old struggles with the lie and worries about what happens if Jody is executed; her 12-year-old has grown close to him. The documentary follows Michaela on her first trip to Maryland to meet Jody in person after eighteen months of a relationship conducted entirely by phone, and to meet his legal team.
