Debt: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Dirk Bezemer, an economist at the University of Groningen, opens this lecture series with a claim that reframes the entire subject: nearly all modern money is debt, created not by governments printing currency but by banks issuing loans. This first episode traces how that system developed, from early forms of credit and lending through to the mechanics of the financial system operating today. Bezemer walks through the process by which a bank loan becomes new money in the economy, and why that arrangement has historically been a source of real wealth creation rather than a hidden flaw. The lecture is built as groundwork for later episodes that will weigh the costs and dangers of the same debt-based system, but on its own it functions as a plain explanation of where money actually comes from. Footage from the Dutch series Nederland van Boven appears alongside the lecture material. Dutch subtitles are included throughout.
