Deep Web
Ross Ulbricht sits at the center of this account of the Silk Road marketplace, the anonymous online bazaar built on Tor and Bitcoin that let users buy drugs, and reportedly worse, with a few clicks. Director Alex Winter tracks the site from its libertarian origins through the FBI's 2013 raid on Ulbricht's San Francisco apartment, and into the federal trial that followed, where prosecutors painted him as the kingpin "Dread Pirate Roberts" and his defense argued he had been set up to take the fall. Interviews with journalists, technologists, Ulbricht's family, and figures from the Bitcoin and cypherpunk world lay out both the technical mechanics of the dark web and the legal fight over what evidence the government could use against it. The film gives real weight to the unanswered questions in the case, including alleged corrupt agents who skimmed funds during the investigation. Narrated by Keanu Reeves, it treats Ulbricht's life sentence as the opening of an argument rather than its conclusion.
