In Thuringia, the far-right Alternative for Germany party has become the strongest force in a state parliament for the first time in post-war history, in the same region where the Nazis first entered a regional government three years before Hitler took national power. This DW documentary asks whether the comparison holds. It travels to Langen in Hesse, where neo-Nazis campaigned in the 1980s and 90s to make the town "foreigner-free," and traces how right-wing extremist groups gained ground in eastern Germany after reunification in 1990. Interviews with historians, activists, and residents sit alongside footage of the mass street demonstrations now drawing hundreds of thousands of Germans in defense of democracy. Rather than simply sounding an alarm, the film weighs the real historical parallels against the differences between Weimar-era collapse and today's institutions, letting viewers judge how far the AfD's rise actually threatens German democracy in 2024.
