Chinguetti, in Mauritania, ranks as the seventh holiest city in Islam, and for centuries its nomadic families gathered each year in the surrounding palm groves for the date harvest. The film follows Getna, the date festival that once brought the whole community together in the oasis, and shows what it has become as nomadism fades: a rare meeting point between those who still herd livestock in the desert and relatives who have settled in the capital, Nouakchott, or moved abroad entirely. Rather than treating this as background, the film narrows to one family making that journey back for the gathering, using their reunion to carry the larger story of a culture pulled apart by migration. Palm trees, tents, and the rhythms of the harvest itself supply the visual texture, standing in for a way of life that the film suggests is now sustained more by yearly reunions like this one than by the daily practice of nomadic herding.
