Forensic geologist Scott Wolter travels through the Hawaiian Islands chasing the legend of the Menehune, a race of dwarf-like builders said to have worked only at night and vanished before Polynesian settlers arrived. Dismissed by many historians as pure folklore, the story persists because of real stonework scattered across the islands, including the Menehune Fishpond on Kauai and the Menehune Ditch, both built with a dry-stack masonry technique unlike anything else in the Pacific. Wolter examines the fitted stones firsthand, questions local historians and cultural experts about oral traditions surrounding the little people, and weighs whether the legend describes an actual earlier population, a folk memory of skilled but ordinary builders, or something invented later to explain construction nobody could otherwise account for. The film moves between quarry sites, fishponds, and interviews, treating the masonry as physical evidence to be read rather than a settled myth. It ends without a tidy verdict, leaving the stones as the strongest argument on either side.
