At 01:23:48 on April 26, 1986, Reactor Number Four at the Chernobyl Power Station outside Pripyat, Ukraine, explodes during a botched safety test, releasing radioactive material across the surrounding region and eventually much of Europe. This film reconstructs the last hour before the blast and the chaotic hours after, using eyewitness accounts from plant workers, firefighters, and local residents to piece together what happened inside the control room and on the ground as the scale of the disaster became clear. It follows the evacuation of Pripyat, the emergency crews sent in with little understanding of the radiation they were facing, and the decades-long aftermath that left the exclusion zone uninhabited. The focus stays on the people caught in the event rather than the physics of the reactor itself, tracking what they saw, what they were told, and what they are still living with.
