Divided States of America Part 2

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Frontline continues its account of the Obama years with the backlash that followed his re-election. The film tracks the Tea Party's rise from a fringe protest movement into a force that reshapes the Republican Party, the 2013 government shutdown fight over the Affordable Care Act, and the gridlock in Washington that follows. Interviews with former administration officials, congressional staffers, and journalists trace how compromise became politically toxic on both sides. The second half turns to race, following the killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson and the protests that spread from there to Baltimore and eventually Charlottesville, where white nationalist marchers and counter-protesters clash in 2017. Archival news footage carries much of the narrative, from shutdown press conferences to street confrontations, while the film builds toward Donald Trump's emergence as a candidate who channels the anger accumulated over both terms. It closes the two-part series by showing how economic frustration, racial conflict, and institutional distrust converged into the divide defining American politics.
