In September 1944, as Operation Market Garden collapsed around Arnhem, a group of German soldiers is said to have buried four ammunition boxes stuffed with gold and jewellery looted from a Dutch bank vault. A declassified map, resurfacing decades later, points to the village of Ommeren and has set off a fresh treasure hunt in the surrounding countryside. This History Hit production follows that trail on the ground, walking the fields and archives where searchers have dug for the hoard, and folds in the wider story of the failed Allied advance that gave the soldiers their chance to vanish with it. The film weighs the physical evidence for the buried boxes against the practical case for skepticism, questioning whether the gold survived the intervening decades of farming, flooding, and rebuilding, or whether the map itself is a wartime fiction. Interviews and location filming carry the investigation, and the mystery stays open at the end: a multi-million dollar hoard, still unaccounted for, somewhere under Dutch soil.
