A single filmmaker travels through North Korea with a small camera, moving past the usual stops in Pyongyang and the Arirang mass games to reach Chongjin and Wonsan, cities barely documented outside state media. He is not building a case against the regime so much as watching how people navigate it: a waitress stares at a tablet computer as if it beamed in from another planet, and a state tour guide admits, carefully, to a fascination with foreign pop culture that his job requires him to keep quiet. The film treats North Korea's official narrative, the parades, the monuments, the choreographed history, as a surface to work around rather than argue with, looking instead for the small unscripted moments that leak through it. There is no narrator explaining what to think; the camera lingers on markets, streets, and faces and lets silences do some of the talking. It played the North Korean Human Rights Film Festival in Toronto and won best feature documentary at San Francisco's Third World Indie Film Festival in 2013.
