Computer graphics strip the water from the Pacific Ocean to expose the seafloor geology behind some of the region's worst natural disasters. The film reconstructs the tectonic mechanics of the Ring of Fire, the horseshoe of fault lines and volcanoes that circles the ocean basin and triggers most of the world's earthquakes and tsunamis. Seafloor mapping data and CGI reveal subduction zones where one plate grinds beneath another, building the pressure that eventually snaps loose as a massive quake. Scientists and geologists explain how a sudden shift on the ocean floor displaces billions of tons of water, sending a tsunami racing toward coastlines that often have only minutes of warning. The film revisits past disasters to show how specific undersea features shaped their destruction, using drained-ocean visualizations to make submarine canyons, fault scarps, and volcanic ridges visible for the first time. The result is a geography lesson built around a hazard: what sits beneath the Pacific's surface, and why it keeps producing the planet's deadliest waves and quakes.
