Dreamwork China: New Generation of Chinese Migrant Workers

2012 · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

In the industrial suburbs of Shenzhen, in China's Guangdong province, young migrant workers speak directly to the camera about the lives they have built far from home. They describe long shifts on factory lines, the wages sent back to families in the countryside, and the small comforts and friendships that make dormitory life bearable. The film lets them talk about what pulled them to the city in the first place and what keeps them there: ambition, debt, curiosity, or simply the absence of better options back home. Their accounts sit somewhere between hope and exhaustion, describing a generation that grew up with more exposure to consumer life and digital culture than their parents did, and whose expectations for the future do not always match what factory work can deliver. Rather than a top-down explanation of China's manufacturing boom, this is a set of first-person portraits of the workers who power it, told in their own words.
