On the Spanish island of La Palma, an unremarkable hillside splits open and starts pouring lava toward the homes of seven thousand people. Volcano expert Chris Horsley arrives within twenty-four hours, but the eruption is too violent for his usual work of collecting molten samples and rigging monitoring gear inside active craters. Instead he and his team follow the flow on foot, tracing how the volcano formed and filming the lava as it swallows roads, vineyards, and entire streets. They talk to residents watching their houses burn, including one man who can only stand and watch his possessions disappear into the flow, and they capture a community pulling together under a disaster with no clear end date. Midway through filming, the lava shifts course and forces the crew out of their own lodging, sending them to sleep in the volcanic hills above the town while the flow keeps moving toward the sea. The film stays close to the ground throughout, favoring what the camera can actually reach over wide aerial spectacle.
