Hidden cameras and undercover footage build the case in this look at how animals move through five industries: food, clothing, entertainment, science, and the pet trade. Narrator Joaquin Phoenix keeps his voice flat and unadorned while the images do the arguing, moving from factory farms and slaughterhouses to fur farms, circuses, marine parks, and research labs. Director Shaun Monson organizes the footage by industry rather than by outrage, letting each sector's routine practices, branding, culling, testing, speak for themselves without much narration to soften them. The pet section turns the lens on shelters and puppy mills, tying the same profit logic to animals people keep as companions. Musicians including Moby, who also scored the film, and Chrissie Hynde appear briefly discussing why they got involved. The film does not interview industry defenders or offer a counterargument; it is built as a sustained visual indictment, assembled from real footage rather than staged scenes, and it expects the material itself to make the case.
