On a July morning in 1915, thousands of Western Electric factory workers and their families crowded aboard the SS Eastland at a Chicago dock, dressed for a company picnic across the lake. The steamer never left the wharf. Top-heavy from added lifeboats installed after the Titanic disaster, and loaded with too many passengers on its upper decks, the Eastland rolled onto its side in the Chicago River within sight of the shore, trapping people below in a matter of minutes. The film reconstructs the disaster through archival photographs, newspaper accounts, and expert interviews, tracing how design changes meant to make ships safer after Titanic instead made this one fatally unstable. It follows the rescue attempts, the recovery of bodies from the river, and the inquest that followed, and asks why a disaster that killed more passengers than the Titanic's American toll has largely disappeared from public memory. The result is a clear account of a preventable tragedy and the regulatory blind spots that caused it.
