El Chapo: The Legend of Shorty
Two filmmakers head into Mexico chasing the story of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, the Sinaloa cartel boss who became one of the world's most wanted men after escaping a maximum-security prison in a laundry cart. Rather than a straight biography, the film follows the crew's own attempt to get close to the myth, talking to locals, journalists, and people who claim direct knowledge of Guzman's rise from a poor mountain village to command of a multibillion-dollar drug empire. Corridos, the folk ballads that celebrate traffickers as folk heroes, play a recurring role, showing how Guzman became as much a cultural legend as a criminal target. The film sits somewhere between investigation and travelogue, with the filmmakers' own uncertainty and risk part of the story, since chasing information about an active cartel leader in Sinaloa is not a neutral act. It captures the man at the height of his outlaw fame, before his final capture and extradition, when he was still mostly rumor, folklore, and fear.
