Elon Musk is 40 years old when Bloomberg's "Risk Takers" sits down with him, his mother Maye Musk, his brother Kimbal, and the people who work alongside him. The film traces his path from leaving South Africa for college in Canada and then the US, through the dot-com years building Zip2 and PayPal, into the three companies that define his post-2000 career: SpaceX, SolarCity, and Tesla Motors. Tesla designer Franz von Holzhausen walks through the Model S, board member and investor Steve Jurvetson makes the case for Musk's judgment, and Car Lab president Eric Noble offers a skeptic's view of whether the electric car business can actually work. Inc. Magazine's Max Chafkin, who profiled Musk in 2007 and 2010, adds outside perspective on how the reputation was built. The interviews stay close to the businesses themselves, PayPal's exit, the solar panel installation model, the mechanics of building a rocket company from scratch, rather than lingering on personality. It closes on Musk's own claim that commercial space travel is within reach in his lifetime.
