Engineering an Empire

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Actor Peter Weller hosts this History Channel series on the engineering feats that built and sustained history's major civilizations. Each episode takes one empire and works backward from its monuments to the logistics behind them: Rome's aqueducts and road network, Egypt's pyramid construction and quarrying methods, Greece's temples and siege engineering, Persia's canals and royal roads. Reenactments put craftsmen and laborers on screen alongside historians and engineers who walk through the physics of raising an obelisk or channeling water across miles of desert without modern tools. The series treats construction as the hidden infrastructure of political power, arguing that an empire's reach was limited as much by what its builders could physically achieve as by its armies. Computer graphics reconstruct structures now ruined or vanished, showing how they were assembled piece by piece. The recurring thread across civilizations is that engineering problems and military ambition were never separate, one enabling the other in each empire covered.
