In 2017, extremists declaring allegiance to ISIS swept into Marawi, a city on the Philippine island of Mindanao, and held it for months against the national army. The film follows the human cost of that siege: more than 200,000 residents forced from their homes as their city became a battleground of airstrikes and street fighting. It sits with survivors and displaced families describing the moment the militants arrived and the scramble to get out before the fighting closed in, and it lays out how a small insurgent force was able to seize and hold a city of that size in a country that is overwhelmingly Catholic. The film treats Marawi's fall as a case study in how quickly a functioning city can collapse under a determined armed group, and how long the displacement outlasts the headlines once the shooting stops. It stays close to the people who lived through it rather than the strategists who fought over it.
