Estimates for Ricci Solitons in Dimension 4
Bennett Chow, visiting from the Institute for Advanced Study, surveys estimates for Ricci solitons in dimension four, the self-similar solutions to Ricci flow that model how singularities form as a Riemannian metric evolves under the heat equation for geometry. Chow frames solitons as the key local models for understanding blow-up behavior, then works through a series of curvature and volume estimates developed mainly by other researchers in the field, situating his own contributions within that broader picture. The talk assumes familiarity with Ricci flow and differential geometry, moving through technical estimates specific to the four-dimensional case, where soliton classification remains incomplete. Delivered at the IAS as part of its analysis and mathematical physics seminar series, the lecture runs just over an hour and is aimed at researchers already working in geometric analysis rather than newcomers to the subject.
