Ethics
MIT OpenCourseWare's Ethics seminar covers classic and contemporary readings on three core areas of moral philosophy. The first third examines metaethics, asking what moral claims mean and whether moral principles can be objectively valid. The middle third turns to normative ethics, taking up what makes a life worth living, what makes actions right or wrong, and what people owe one another. The final third addresses moral character, examining the nature of virtue and the conditions under which someone can be held responsible for their actions. Materials follow the OCW format of syllabus, readings, and assignments drawn from MIT's actual course, letting a self-study student work through the same seminar structure used in the classroom. No certificate is offered, but the full reading list and assignment sequence are provided free.
