A 1949 exorcism case, later fictionalized as the horror film The Exorcist, anchors this look at demonic possession claims across several decades. Priests who took part in the original case describe what they saw and did, and the film uses their accounts as a way into the wider history of exorcism as a Catholic ritual. It moves between that historical material and a more skeptical register, bringing in psychological explanations for possession symptoms alongside the religious framework the priests themselves worked within. Other cases from around the world are included alongside the central 1949 story, giving some sense of how the ritual has been practiced outside that one famous instance. The film does not settle the question it keeps returning to, whether these events have a natural explanation or not, and instead lets the priests' testimony and the clinical counterarguments sit side by side for the viewer to weigh.
