Experts in Emotion: Lisa Feldman Barrett on What is an Emotion
Psychologist Lisa Feldman Barrett talks with June Gruber of Yale University about the nature of emotion, in this installment of Yale's Experts in Emotion Series. Barrett describes how she first became drawn to studying emotion and walks through the central discoveries of her research, including her challenge to the idea that emotions are universal, hardwired states with fixed facial signatures. She discusses her constructionist view, in which emotions are built by the brain from more basic ingredients rather than triggered as discrete circuits. The conversation moves into what she considers the most promising open questions in affective science, and closes with her advice for students wanting to enter the field. The format is a sit-down interview with chapter markers, running just over half an hour, with Gruber asking the questions and Barrett doing most of the talking.
