Industrial livestock farming produces around 15 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, and science journalist Ingolf Baur travels to labs and startups chasing an alternative. In California, Joshua Tetrick of Good Meat grows chicken muscle cells in bioreactors, feeding them plant-based nutrients and molding the resulting cell pulp onto a plant scaffold to form fibrous meat that still costs hundreds of dollars a kilo. At UC Davis, geneticist Alison Van Eenennaam uses CRISPR to engineer cattle that produce only male offspring, since male calves grow faster on fewer resources. In Helsinki, Pasi Vainikka of Solar Foods cultivates bacteria on CO2 and hydrogen in giant fermenters to make Solein, a flavorless protein powder meant to replace eggs and milk. The film moves between these labs and factory-farm footage, letting each scientist argue for their own fix while weighing land use, water, antibiotic resistance, and cost against each other. It ends without declaring a winner, just a menu of unfinished experiments.
