Fashion Week Internationale: Nigeria

2012 · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Lagos Fashion Week gets the VICE treatment as the crew follows the designers, models, and socialites turning out for runway shows, afterparties on yachts, and the raw physical spectacle of the catwalk itself. Nigerian designers talk about building an industry meant to rival Paris and Milan while working within a culture where public displays of wealth and body are both celebrated on the runway and constrained elsewhere. The film sits that contradiction next to Nigeria's criminalization of same-sex marriage, letting attendees and organizers describe what it means to throw a glamorous, body-forward event in a country where that openness carries legal risk for some of the people involved. Between fittings backstage and interviews with attendees dressed for the occasion, the episode treats fashion week less as a trend piece and more as a window into who gets to be visible in Lagos, and on what terms. It runs light on narration, letting the scene and the people in it do the talking.
