In Rostock, northern Germany, nurse Paul Buchholz has spent fifteen years helping dying patients spend their last weeks with as little fear as possible. Ralf Löwenhagen, a lifelong farmer now living with pancreatic cancer, brightens visibly when Buchholz wheels him out to the terrace or he joins garden therapy sessions. An hour away in Bernstorf, entrepreneur Wolfgang Röhr has turned an old castle into a hospice in memory of his wife, who died of cancer; resident Carolin Kumpe, who risks suffocating from an autoimmune disease, spends her strong days by the castle pond. The film also follows the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund's Wünschewagen, a wish-fulfillment ambulance service running since 2014, as volunteers drive a dying guest to the zoo for one more look at the penguins. Filmed inside hospices and homes, with carers, volunteers, and patients speaking directly to camera, the film treats dying as something to be lived through rather than merely endured, without flinching from what that costs.
