Since the start of the Gaza war, at least 100,000 Palestinians have crossed into Egypt, and this DW film follows several of them rebuilding lives in Cairo while dreading news from home. Fourteen-year-old Moataz Al-Sabaawy lives with his parents and sister after his two older brothers were killed in an Israeli strike on the family home; he calls relatives in Gaza regularly, bracing for word of another death. Restaurant owner Bassem Medhat Abu Al-Aoun escaped with more than 50 family members after both his Gaza City restaurants were destroyed, and has since opened a new restaurant in Cairo, though his future there is uncertain. Egyptian journalists describe how, with the border often sealed and humanitarian visas hard to obtain, some families pay brokers several thousand dollars per person to arrange passage. The film also visits Israa Ali's charity Olives Grandsons, where more than 100 volunteers use art therapy, sport, and singing to help traumatized children from Gaza, alongside lessons following the Palestinian curriculum for families still hoping to return.
