Calcio storico, Florence's centuries-old form of street football, mixes rugby, wrestling, and bare-knuckle boxing into a contest so violent that teams sometimes finish with more men in the hospital than on the field. This film follows four Florentines training for a place on one of the rival squads that fight each June in Piazza Santa Croce. A father and son join the same team hoping the brutality of the sport will fix what conversation cannot. A butcher treats the tournament as a way to work through trauma he does not otherwise talk about. A clerk with no standing in his neighborhood sees a win as the only route to respect among men who have ignored him his whole life. The camera follows each through months of conditioning and sparring before cutting to the tournament itself, where centuries of local ritual collide with real injury and real stakes. The film treats the fighting as the surface of something else: what these men are actually trying to prove, and to whom.
