A man in Hanover believes he has found love with a woman he met online, until intimate photos he shared become the tool for blackmail. A retiree in Munich, chasing a promising investment with an online business partner, loses nearly a quarter of a million euros before the contact vanishes and he starts tracing where the money went. That trail leads to a criminal network worth billions, based in Asia, and the film turns to two former scammers who describe being held against their will in compounds in Myanmar, forced to run these schemes on strangers around the world. Their escape, and documents they smuggled out, give the film its most striking material, laying out how kidnapped or trafficked workers staff the call centers behind the romance and investment scams flooding dating apps and messaging platforms. Investigators interviewed in the film call this forced-labor scam industry more lucrative now than drug trafficking across Southeast Asia. DW's reporting moves between victims, perpetrators, and investigators to show how the same operation produces both.
