Forgotten Bird of Paradise
West Papua sits 250 kilometers north of Australia, and for more than 45 years its people have fought an armed and political struggle against Indonesian rule. Indonesia bars foreign journalists from the region, so this film works around that blackout to show what outside cameras rarely capture: villagers and independence activists describing decades of military occupation, and their stated willingness to die for self-determination. It lays out the historical roots of the conflict, from the disputed transfer of the territory to Indonesia through the ongoing presence of Indonesian troops in the highlands and towns. Local voices carry most of the film, describing life under surveillance and the risks of speaking to outsiders at all. The result is less a comprehensive history than a smuggled-out testimony, built from footage that was never supposed to leave West Papua, aimed at a conflict most of the world has never heard named.
