A DW team has followed Nour Elhouda Al Ahmad Alhammash and her family since 2015, when they arrived from Damascus and settled in Golzow, a small village in Brandenburg whose mayor hoped refugee families could keep the local primary school from closing. Nine years old and unable to speak German, Nour is enrolled in first grade; footage and interviews track her through the years as she learns the language fast enough to skip two grades, moves up to secondary school in 2019, and sits her Abitur exams in 2025 with medicine as her goal. Interviews with villagers capture the mix of welcome and wariness that greeted the family's arrival, while scenes with Nour's parents, now settled in Frankfurt (Oder) where her father works as a tiler, show a household that has grown by another child and set aside any plan to return to Syria. Ten years of accumulated footage give the film its shape: a single family's arc from displacement to a university application, told through the people who watched it happen.
