Ryyan Alshebl fled Syria in 2015 to avoid conscription into Bashar al-Assad's army, arriving in Germany without speaking a word of German. This film follows his escape route and his transformation into a small-town German politician, tracing the years he spent learning the language, training as an administrative assistant, and working at the town hall in Althengstett before running for mayor of the village of Ostelsheim. In April 2023, at 29, he won that election with 55.41 percent of the vote, a result that drew interviews from more than 100 media outlets including the BBC. Interviews with Alshebl himself, footage of Ostelsheim and its town hall, and accounts of his journey out of Syria build a picture of integration that runs against the usual headlines about refugees in Europe. The documentary treats his rise as a case study in what asylum and citizenship processes can produce, without glossing over how unusual his path from refugee camp to mayor's office actually is.
