West Papua sits at the eastern edge of Indonesia, home to an indigenous Melanesian population whose decades-long push for independence has run alongside military crackdowns, resource extraction, and a media blackout that keeps most outside cameras out of the region. This film traces that history, laying out how Papuans ended up under Indonesian rule, why the independence movement has never gone away, and what daily life looks like for people caught between soldiers and separatist fighters in the highlands and towns. It uses interviews, archival material, and on-the-ground footage to explain a conflict most viewers outside the Pacific know almost nothing about, treating the Papuan side of the story as central rather than a footnote to Jakarta's account. The film doesn't resolve the dispute over sovereignty; it lays out the stakes, the history, and the people living through it, and leaves the argument over what happens next open.
