El Salvador is on track to post the highest murder rate in the world, overtaking Honduras, with more than 5,700 killings in a single year in a country of just over six million people, close to one murder every hour. The spike follows the collapse of a truce between the government and the country's powerful street gangs, including the 18th Street gang, which controls parts of the transport system. VICE News correspondent Danny Gold travels with police and military units carrying out nightly raids under the government's "iron fist" strategy, which now charges gang membership itself as terrorism. Car bombings targeting police stations and gang factions dedicated to killing officers show how far the conflict has escalated on both sides. Gold also talks to residents caught between the two forces, people for whom informing on gangs is dangerous and legitimate work is scarce. The film stays close to the raids and the streets rather than the statistics, showing what a declared war between a state and its gangs looks like on the ground.
