Gaucho

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Heraldo Rial has spent eighty years working the same stretch of Patagonian wilderness, a thousand hectares of open range he has ridden for most of his life. The film follows him through the daily work of cattle ranching, herding, mending fences, breaking horses, that has defined the gaucho tradition for generations, and lets him talk through what he has learned tending land and livestock in one of the more remote corners of Argentina. Rial is presented as one of the last men still living this way in full, a figure who carries an entire vanishing skill set in his hands and memory. The camera stays close to the landscape itself, the grasslands, the horses, the weather, that shaped this culture in the first place. Running underneath the portrait is a quieter worry: fences, roads, and modern land use are closing in on the open range gauchos depended on, and Rial's generation may be the last to know the life before it changes for good.
