Gaza in January 2002, filmed by journalist Sandra Jordan for Unreported World as Israel retaliates against a wave of suicide attacks. Her crew moves through schoolrooms where pupils abandon lessons in tears when gunfire erupts nearby, and through a hospital ward tending children wounded in the latest fighting. At a mosque, a white-shrouded fighter tells a rapt crowd of young boys that he wants to die for the cause, and the film lingers on how such men are treated like celebrities. One young man tells the camera plainly: his body may be the only weapon Palestinians have left to use. The report tracks why so many young Palestinians are turning away from Yasser Arafat's secular leadership toward Hamas and harder-line rejectionists, capturing Arafat officials brawling with each other at a public meeting, a scene the film sets directly against the order and size of a Hamas rally. The contrast makes Arafat's shrinking authority visible rather than just asserted.
